Isn’t that what we hear all throughout the holidays…What are your New Years resolutions? It’s a New Year, I am going to be a new me! What goals can I make for next year that are going to help me feel completely worthless when I don’t succeed? You know the feeling we are talking about. The one where you get all excited to change everything you’ve ever wanted different about yourself and somehow this year is going to be the one where you actually do it. Then, life creeps in, the reality that change takes time and commitment overruns your previous enthusiasm and before you know it, you find yourself giving up on all of your dreams of change for the New Year and it’s only January!
We have all been there. We all struggle. We all want to be and do better, but most of us just don’t really know where to begin. Let us give you a few tips.
First, scrap the idea that a New Year’s Resolution List is going to get you where you want to go. Don’t fall for the trick anymore!
Next, take a few minutes and write down just 2 or 3 things that if you could make a change with, in the next 3 months, would make you feel happy—whoah! Slow the wheels down—put on the parking brakes!! Remember…. We are talking about making a change, as in some improvement, not a total overhaul wham bam-I’m good! That mentality, that you are going to change something, do a total overhaul within a matter of months, on something you’ve been building for years, sometimes for decades, has got to go!! Rome wasn’t built overnight people and you cannot expect your body to rebuild your health overnight either!!! So, as we said, make a list of 2 or 3 things you want to see Improvement on in the next three months!
Lastly, Do any of those things have to do with your health? Emotional? Physical? Mental? Our bet is that at least a couple of them do!
Ok, this is where is gets a little more difficult. Now it is time to get real with yourself. Are you really ready to step out of the patterns of the past? Are you really ready to take this leap into the unknown of your future and change who you are? If the answer is a resounding YES! That is awesome! Good for you! However, if you are one of those feeling apprehensive and feeling like maybe you should scrap all of this, do us a favor…. Close your eyes and take a deep breath.
Take another deep breath and recenter yourself on the possibilities. We will wait for you.
Ok. Possibilities. Well, change is possible. While it may be challenging and it may take longer than we’d like to get to where we want to be, it is possible and we must see the possibilities and work towards them, giving ourselves the patience and grace we deserve. If you want to see real change in your life, you need to get with the right people- people who will help you be accountable, people who will encourage and support you, people who have a passion for helping other people succeed and lastly, people with the tools to help you become the best you that You can be!!
