The Pill is Birth Control and the question is:

Does Birth Control Really Regulate Your Menstrual Cycle?

Menstruation is a normal part of every woman’s life.  As your body is learning how to regulate its hormones, especially those related to menstruation, you can often experience irregular periods, heaving bleeding and painful cramping.  It can take several years for your body to regulate and sometimes our bodies don’t produce the needed amounts of certain hormones to regulate normally.

Tricia’s Story

“I remember as a 14-year-old teenager going to the doctor with my mom for my heavy and painful periods looking for some answers. The only answer they gave us was let’s try birth control!  My mom decided that was not the route to go yet having no clue of what else to do and not many resources available back then, I was left to suffer through it.  Health is not a cookie cutter process.  What is best for one individual may not be right for another.   I don’t feel like my health care professional was concerned with what was causing my issues or worried about trying to help me figure it out.  Quick fix mentality is very harmful.  Through my experience, I have come to the conclusion that when my health care professionals don’t understand something and don’t want to take the time to figure it out, they just keep doing and prescribing what they have seen done before and for me, that is just not acceptable anymore and it shouldn’t be for you either!”

No, Birth Control does not regulate your cycle but it does do a whole lot to affect your body and cover up your health issues!

Birth control is not the answer to your hormone imbalances.  In a way, it seems the pill does work as it gets a person to have regular periods, but what they are not telling you is how the pill is actually “working.”  Birth control works by turning off your hormones. YES! You heard that right!  Your hormones are suppressed and then replaced by substituting a small, measured dose of synthetic hormones.

These synthetic hormones are prescribed with a week of placebo pills, or pills that contain no active hormones.  The week the placebo pills are taken, your body experiences a drop in hormone levels which causes the lining of your uterus to shed. This is what your period becomes and often times this bleeding is noticeably different than periods you had before taking the pill.

Because your body has been shut down in this way, it is impossible for you to regulate and actually heal the issues going on.  It’s like putting a band aid on a wound that needed stitches and thinking you fixed the problem!  Usually within months of discontinuing birth control, all of the symptoms you were previously experiencing come back and are sometimes worse than before.

Because you have hormone receptors in every system of your body, symptoms can be present outside of the reproductive tract.  As well as having fertility issues, Hormonal alterations can lead to skin issues, digestive problems as well as migraines, weight gain and mood disorders, such as anxiety or depression.
